Ms Ullamaija Kivikuru is Emerita Professor of journalism at University of Helsinki, Finland. She received her MA (Literature) at the University of Helsinki and another MA (Communication) at the University of Wisconsin, USA. Her PhD degree (Communication) is from University of Helsinki. Ullamaija Kivikuru worked as professional journalist (print media, mainly magazines) for more than a dozen years. After returning to the university, she has taught at the University of Helsinki and several years at Tanzania School of Journalism (now School of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Dar es Salaam). She has also carried on research in several eastern and southern African countries. Her PhD thesis compared Finnish and Tanzanian mediascapes. Her main research interests have been media and democracy, development communication, gender studies and magazine journalism. Professor Kivikuru has published a dozen books about media in Finnish, Swedish and English.
